Heads up: This one’s a bit longer than usual. However, if you’re interested in how we do things, or care about keeping your paint and ceramic coating protected long term, it’s worth the read.

By now, you probably know the basics: they boost gloss, make maintenance easier, and protect against UV, etching, and grime. That info is everywhere. But what doesn’t get said enough, and what I’ve learned over the last 14 years, is that maintenance is everything.

Fortunate to be one of the first few detailers in the country to embrace ceramic coatings. I’ve spent over a decade preaching not just their benefits, but their limits. I’ll keep saying it: no matter how many layers you apply, how thick the coating is, or how long it’s marketed to last, if you don’t maintain it, it won’t perform, or last.

Think of your ceramic coating like the shields on a Federation starship.

When you first coat the car, your shields are at 100%. But every drive, through rain, pollen, brake dust, tree sap, bugs, and bird droppings all take a toll. Let that sit too long, and…

[Cue McCoy voice] “She can’t take much more of this, Captain!

Just like the ship takes real damage once shields fail, your clear coat suffers once the coating is compromised. At that point, the only fix is polish and recoat. That’s a full refit.

Enter the Decontamination Wash

Weekly or biweekly washes are crucial. Whether it’s rinse-less, two-bucket, or even a tunnel wash—we’re not here to judge. But at least once a year, your coating needs a true decontamination wash: a reset that strips embedded contamination and strengthens protection.

We call it ABC+P:

    • Acid – Removes iron particles, mineral deposits

    • Base – Neutralizes acid and dissolves grease, oils, bugs, light sap

    • Chemical Neutralizer – pH-balanced soap to stop reactions

    • Protection – Refresh the surface with a topper (like M1 Shot or HydroFoam)

Done right, this process can eliminate the need to clay. And that’s good, because even “fine” clay can mar a coating. We only clay when necessary and always with proper lubrication.

DIY Options for the Committed Enthusiast

Want to do it yourself? Here’s how. Just promise me you’ll only do this:

    • On a cool surface

    • In the shade

    • When you have time to take it slow

Don’t rush. Rushing causes stress. Stress defeats the point of DIY. And a rushed job misses things.

Touch Method (Hands-On)

For the traditionalist:

    1. Start with a dedicated pre-soak to cool the surface and loosen grime.

    2. Use three buckets:

      • Acidic soap (e.g. Modesta M3)

      • Alkaline soap (e.g. Modesta M4)

      • pH Neutral or silica-infused soap (Reset, Bathe+, etc.)

    3. Dry with a towel misted in a topper like Modesta M2, or use a blower and apply one after.

Touchless Method (Well… Sort Of)

Part 1 is mostly touchless. Part 2 can be added depending on how dirty the car is.

    • ChemX 2-Step Touchless System – Strong, but not beginner-friendly.

    • Optimum Decon Wash – FerreX first, Optimum Car Wash after.

    • CarPro Full System (DIY-Friendly):

      • Optional: TarX for sap or bugs

      • Pre-wash with Lift

      • Rinse → spray IronX → wash with IronX Soap

      • Rinse → foam and wash with Descale

      • Final wash with Reset

      • Protect with HydroFoam (foam + rinse), HydroLite (spray + rinse), or…

      • Reload (mist wet panel or towel, wipe and buff any residue with dry towel.)

Pro Tip: Wash drying towels immediately after using Reload, a Silica Sealant or any other drying aid. These will inhibit the towels ability to do it’s job, absorb water and dry your ride.

No Hose? No Problem (Rinseless Option)

If you live in an apartment or lack access to water, try this Labocosmetica System:

Foam Lance Setup (Consumer-Grade Decon Wash)

Want a pro-style foam setup? Try:

All but SIDERO work through a foam lance. Vendors like Detailed Image and Autoality carry full systems.

Pick what works for you, or skip the chemistry, and we’ll handle it with a Decontamination Wash & Coating Maintenance Detail.

TL;DR – Decon Wash Recap

                    • Annual decon washes extend coating life

                    • Acid → Base → Neutralize → Protect

                    • Skip clay unless truly needed (even fine clay mars)

                    • Always work in shade on cool paint

                    • Don’t want to mess with it? We’ve got you.
